Post-Election Round-Up

After a fast-paced fall election, join Courtney Lockhart, CHF Canada’s Program Manager, Policy and Government Relations, for a survey of the new political landscape: What does our recently formed federal government look like? And what is the potential for future federal housing policy?

We’ll also discuss how co-op members can continue to engage with their newly elected (or re-elected) MPs using the Include Co-op campaign, to advocate for strong and sustainable housing policies, such as maintaining rental assistance programs, and supporting co-op development.

Morning Workshops

Agency Reports: Tools for Smarter Federal Co-ops*

Do you know if your co-op is at high risk of running out of money? Is your co-op charging enough to members to cover its costs every year and save for the future? Does your co-op have vacancy or arrears problems? What happens if your board is not abiding by the rules of operation set up by CMHC?

The Agency provides its clients (which are federal co-ops) with four reports each year that touch on these vital questions.  We will review them in detail and show you what to look for and how to get better results. For co-ops coming to the end of their agreement, we will introduce other useful reports including a long-term financial planning tool and our Annual Health Check Service.
*This workshop will be offered in English and in French.

HSA Co-ops: City of Ottawa 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Plan Consultation & Review

Join representatives from the City of Ottawa as they review the City’s 10-Year Housing and Homelessness plan, now at the mid-way mark. If you have not had the opportunity to provide input, or are interested in the progress on this plan, don’t pass up on this chance to have your say!

Afternoon Workshops

Getting the word out: The co-op difference! *

As co-op housing members you take pride in the positive role you play in your co-op community, in your surrounding neighbourhood, and in the larger community. But it can be challenging to explain how co-ops function and why we do things the way we do. The Co-op Act, the International Co-operative Principles, and your co-op bylaws and policies spell it all out, but they don’t make it any easier to explain the essentials to new members or people on the street! Using practical ideas and activities, we’ll talk about how you can become a strong co-op advocate—so that your members and your community understand and appreciate the co-op difference!
*This workshop will be offered in English and in French.

Long-term financial planning for co-op communities

As operating agreements and mortgages come to an end, housing co-ops have to juggle aging buildings, new-build projects and limited funds. Now more than ever, long-term planning plays a critical role in sustaining our aging co-op housing stock. We’ve developed tools and expertise to help your co-op address these needs. We’ll provide you with an in-depth look into asset and financial planning to help you ensure the long-term success and viability of our co-op buildings and communities.
